Tuba player Joe Daley is one of the premiere exponents of his instruments. He may be familiar with Bop Shop regulars as a member of Jason Hwang’s Burning Bridge ensemble back in 2010. Daley has also played the Rochester Jazz Festival several times. But Daley’s history is deep and multi-faceted. He was a member of Taj Mahal’s Real Thing band with four tubas. He’s contributed to various Gil Evans ensembles over the years. He was a member (along with drummer Warren Smith…more about him later) of Sam Rivers’ Tuba Trio. While recordings released under his own name haven’t been commonplace, what he has released has been unique in jazz literature. Seven Deadly Sins recorded with a big band, the Earth Tone Ensemble received great reviews when released in 2010. But it’s his 2015 release, The Tuba Trio Chronicles that’s relevant to what we’ll be hearing. It’s a tribute to Sam Rivers and the trio of which Daley and Smith were members. It received many favorable reviews including this one by Hrayar Attarian:

Joining Daley will be reedman extraordinaire Scott Robinson. He’s known for playing just about any kind of wind instrument. But his own distinct personality shines through in whatever he plays. He’s played with everyone from Lionel Hampton to Anthony Braxton and that’s quite a range. He’s also a favorite player of Maria Schneider and Bob Brookmeyer.

Drummer / percussionist Warren Smith’s resume is perhaps even more diverse encompassing Harry Partch, Max Roach’s M’Boom Ensemble, Van Morrison (that’s his vibes you hear on Astral Weeks), Pearls Before Swine (that’s his string arrangements you hear on their first two albums). His jazz affiliations are even more impressive having worked with Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams, Bill Dixon and many, many others. And that’s only covering part of it.

You don’t want to miss this one. Three musicians with a wide-open view of music paying tribute to one of the masters (Sam Rivers) should make for an exciting evening.
